USSS Digital Forensics Case Study

Project Overview

The US Secret Service, through the National Computer Forensics Institute, contracted George Mason’s Criminal Investigations and Network Analysis (CINA) Center and Rock Creek to produce a series of 20 videos to serve as introductory primers for in-person training of state, local, and tribal law enforcement on a variety of digital forensics topics. These government services videos covered a range of topics from mobile device forensics to the interconnected Internet of Things, to the storage structures of individual devices and drives, and many more.

The Challenge

How do you create easily understandable content on incredibly technical subjects for a very wide range of law enforcement agencies, from small-town local sheriff’s offices to major metropolitan police departments? In the rapidly changing online world, law enforcement officials all over the country are expected to recognize, understand, capture, process, and explain an increasing amount of digital evidence with the same care towards preservation as with traditional forensics evidence.

The Solution

Working hand in hand with renowned digital forensics experts with decades of criminal and cyber-crime investigation experience, Rock Creek produced nearly 400 minutes of finished lecture-based educational video content supported by custom motion graphics, original photography, archival footage, and crime scene and courtroom recreations.
