4 Ways Medical Training Videos Can Transform Your Program
Working in healthcare means embracing lifelong learning, and well-trained medical professionals can make a life-and-death difference in patient lives. As medical technologies and procedures – and pathogens – evolve, it’s critical for healthcare professionals to stay ahead of the changes in their field.
Healthcare video production has increasingly become an indispensable tool for teaching, practicing, and retaining critical skills. Studies show learners remember 95% of what they see in video compared to just 10% from text.
At Rock Creek Productions, we’ve had the privilege of partnering with leading organizations in healthcare and the nonprofit sector for healthcare video production. Here’s what we’ve learned:
How healthcare video production is changing medical education
Healthcare professionals often need to master concepts and techniques well enough to be able to act with confidence in high-stakes environments. And sometimes, as with the case of emergencies like the pandemic, they need to learn fast.
Here’s how we’ve seen video step in and pull its weight:
1. It maximizes learning retention
Detailed close-ups and 3D animations simplify complex surgeries and treatments, creating vivid, memorable visuals. While individualized teaching is time-intensive, video replicates an “over-the-shoulder” clarity that static media simply can’t achieve.
The flexibility of the format and its adaptability to different learning styles is a bonus. We’ve seen tremendous success with multimedia formats for the Virginia Infection Prevention Training Center (VIPTC). You can find our most impactful videos here.
2. It reduces training costs over time
Once produced, high-quality medical training videos can be reused indefinitely, eliminating the need for repeated live training sessions. This ensures consistent, high-quality instruction across departments, teams, or facilities—saving both time and money.
Video also prevents discrepancies inherent in live, in-person training.
3. It documents expert knowledge for future use
Medical training videos preserve the expertise of senior professionals, ensuring valuable knowledge isn’t lost when staff retire or move on. This archival approach safeguards institutional knowledge for future generations.
4. It promotes preventative care
Medical videos are also an effective tool for raising awareness about preventative care. Campaigns focused on health screenings, vaccinations, or wellness tips motivate viewers to take proactive steps toward better health.
For example, our videos for VIPTC educate audiences on the broad topic of infection prevention in engaging, actionable ways. Watch an example here:
Tips for creating effective medical training videos
1. Define clear objectives
Start by identifying the purpose of your medical video and the specific skills or knowledge it aims to deliver. Defining clear learning goals shapes the content and structure for maximum effectiveness.
2. Keep it concise and focused
Medical professionals have demanding schedules, so content should be designed to fit their bandwidth. Break information into short, digestible segments, each focused on a single topic or procedure. Prioritize clarity over excessive detail, and don’t be afraid to use humor to keep learners engaged and lessons memorable.
This video we made for the Department of Veterans Affairs explains its technology transfer programme in less than 3 minutes:
3. Leverage motion graphics
Use 3D animations and motion graphics to clarify complex anatomy, molecular processes, or surgical techniques that cannot be easily captured on video. This is especially important for internal or microscopic views.
You can also use these tools as visual aids like text overlays, arrows, or slow-motion replays to emphasize critical steps, as we did for this video for VIPTC:
4. Incorporate real-world scenarios
Simulate practical, real-world situations healthcare professionals may encounter, such as patient interactions or emergencies. This approach makes training relatable and actionable.
For instance, we’ve seen success with real-world scenarios in work for high-stakes professionals like firefighters and security personnel.
In this video we made for Ekso Bionics, we chose to showcase their futuristic exoskeleton technology using live action. We used plenty of close-ups and demos of the orthotics in action so viewers can grasp all their possibilities.
5. Ensure accessibility
Ensure the video is accessible to all learners by using clear fonts, high contrast, and appropriate pacing. Additionally, use subtitles or dub the video into different languages to ensure accessibility to diverse audiences, including multilingual teams or individuals with hearing impairments.
6. Accommodate diverse learning styles
Another aspect of accessibility is making your training content suitable for different learning styles. Offer complementary resources like video transcripts, PDFs, checklists, or infographics to reinforce the video’s content and give learners reference material they can revisit.
7. Ensure compliance with regulations
Adhere to healthcare regulations like HIPAA or GDPR when demonstrating procedures or using patient data. This protects patient privacy and ensures legal compliance.
8. Have fun
Medical training or preventative healthcare awareness really doesn’t have to be boring. In this video for VIPTC, we took a serious topic that could be perceived as icky and uncomfortable to talk about, and added some levity by making urine samples “talk.”
